The idea
What Is a Walk-In?
A walk-in, in the language of modern spirituality, is a soul who enters an incarnation already in progress.
Instead of being born as an infant and growing up, the walk-in soul is said to step into an adult life, often by loving agreement with the soul who was living it before.
In the classic teaching, the original soul has completed what it came to do, or feels ready to return home. A soul with a particular purpose for this time on Earth offers to continue the life. The departing soul is lovingly released, and the incoming soul carries the story forward, keeping the memories of the life while bringing its own gifts, frequency and mission.
Ruth Montgomery brought the term into public awareness in her 1979 book Strangers Among Us. She described walk-ins as evolved souls who skip the years of childhood so they can serve right away. Since then the idea has grown into a rich, varied body of teaching. Some describe a full exchange of souls. Others describe a gentle merging, where a higher aspect or a companion soul weaves into the one already present.

Key ideas in the teachings
- Agreement. Teachers stress that a true walk-in comes from consent and love between souls. Both souls are honored.
- Continuity. The walk-in is said to keep the memories of the life, often feeling them as if watching a film of someone dear.
- Purpose. Walk-ins are often described as arriving for service: healing, teaching, creating, or helping humanity through a time of change.
- Integration. The arrival is described as the start of a process, a season of settling in, gentle discovery and growth.
